Clayton White, now in his sixth season as South Carolina’s defensive coordinator, is still searching for the formula that will turn a 4‑8 record into a winning campaign.
A season of growth and setbacks
The Gamecocks’ defense showed flashes of brilliance, most notably in the October 25 clash with Alabama, where it pressured quarterback Ty Simpson and limited the Crimson Tide’s rushing attack.
Despite a 14‑play, 79‑yard drive that ended in a touchdown and two‑point conversion, White said the unit learned valuable lessons about endurance and discipline.
Five starters return on that side of the ball, four of them anchored in the second and third levels, giving the coordinator a core to build around as he tweaks the scheme to fit the personnel.
White stresses accountability, insisting that the team wins and loses together, and that the mentality has remained unchanged since his arrival.
Looking ahead
The focus now is on tightening third‑and‑short situations and improving second‑down defense, areas that proved costly in the previous season.
Injury concerns linger, with key defender Dylan Stewart nursing a back issue, but the coaching staff expects him to emerge as a vocal leader once fully healthy.
Overall, the defense will retain its base concepts while experimenting with new alignments, aiming to stay dynamic and keep opposing offenses off the field.
