A season that ended sooner than hoped
The Ole Miss Rebels finished the 2026 schedule with a 41‑23 record, only to see their run cut short in the College World Series. The loss marks the end of a campaign that had already sparked optimism across the program and among its fan base.
Coach Mike Bianco, now in his 27th year at the helm, is already turning his attention to the 2027 season. With a core group of seniors set to graduate and several underclassmen eyeing professional opportunities, the roster will look markedly different when play resumes next spring.
Among the players whose eligibility is winding down are power hitters Tristan Bissetta and Judd Utermark, as well as outfielder Will Furniss. Their departures leave a noticeable void in the middle of the lineup, prompting the coaching staff to seek fresh sources of power and speed.
Pitching staff changes are also on the horizon. Starting pitchers Hunter Elliott, Taylor Rabe and Cade Townsend are all eligible for the upcoming MLB draft, with Townsend ranked No. 29 and Rabe No. 90 on MLB.com’s prospect list. Elliott, meanwhile, can invoke a medical redshirt to return for a sixth season, a decision that could bolster the rotation if he chooses to stay.
The transfer portal has already begun to fill some of those gaps. Louisiana Tech graduate transfer Trey Hawsey, who posted a .335 average and 15 home runs in 2026, is being considered as a potential addition. The portal window closes on June 30, giving the Rebels a narrow window to lock in new talent.
Adding to the intrigue, the MLB draft will take place on July 11‑12. Several Ole Miss players are projected as top prospects, meaning the draft could further reshape the 2027 lineup by either retaining talent through signing bonuses or sending key arms and bats to professional clubs.
Overall, the Rebels’ strategy hinges on a blend of developing internal talent, leveraging the transfer market, and capitalizing on the draft. The coming months will reveal which pieces fit into the puzzle as Ole Miss aims to return to the national stage with a refreshed roster.
