A Global Canvas at the Airport
Seattle‑Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is turning its concourses into an open‑air gallery ahead of a major international soccer competition. The airport has teamed up with the Seattle Sounders and Seattle Reign to cast bronze pieces from team memorabilia, giving travelers a tangible link to the sport before they even step onto a plane.
Local creators have contributed a diverse array of works, from cast‑glass forms that echo the motion of a ball to sports‑themed patterns that weave art‑historical references into modern design. One Seattle duo, Judith and Daniel Caldwell, crafted a running figure that nods to centuries of visual storytelling, while sculptor Rachael Comer fashioned a decorative cake in bronze, turning a familiar bakery motif into a metallic tribute.
The project also draws on the talents of artists from beyond the Pacific Northwest. Brazilian installation artist Henrique Oliveira will display a sprawling tree constructed from reclaimed materials, while Colombian‑Australian María Fernanda Cardoso presents paper prints of fantastical spiders that seem to crawl across the walls. From Guatemala, Sandra Monterroso contributes a piece rooted in natural pigments, and England’s Romson Bustillo offers hand‑blown, sand‑carved glass that catches the terminal’s light.
Additional voices include Seattle-based creators such as Weston Lambert, who shaped cast‑glass forms from soccer equipment sourced from local clubs, and Holly Ballard Martz, whose nickel‑plated bronze spheres reference the journeys of travelers. Daniel Carrillo and Eirik Johnson collaborate on a multi‑panel daguerreotype photogram that blends historic photographic processes with contemporary mirror finishes.
Beyond the regional contributors, the airport will showcase works from an international roster. Artists from Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines and other nations will display pieces that reflect the cultural mosaic of the tournament’s participants. This global infusion is intended to deepen the sense of connection for fans arriving from around the world, turning the airport itself into a celebration of sport, art and shared experience.
Enhancing the Fan Journey
The new installations are strategically placed throughout the terminal to catch the eye of departing and arriving passengers. By integrating art that references both local teams and far‑flung cultures, SEA aims to elevate the travel experience, offering a moment of surprise and delight that aligns with the excitement of the upcoming soccer festivities.
