Ball State University’s baseball program has quietly become a pipeline to the big leagues, with six of its former players currently active in Major League Baseball. Under the guidance of head coach Rich Maloney, these alumni have carved out distinct paths, from debut appearances to steady contributions on the field.
A Legacy of Development
Alex Call, a 2016 MAC Player of the Year, is now a utility piece for the Los Angeles Dodgers, having logged 41 games this season. Zach Cole broke into the Houston Astros roster last September, while Drey Jameson has posted a 3.32 ERA across 15 relief appearances for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Chayce McDermott, another Dodger, has yet to see extensive action, limited to a single relief inning, and Kyle Nicolas remains on the Baltimore Orioles’ roster without a debut to date. Tyler Schweitzer, pitching for the Chicago White Sox, has thrown four innings this year.
The six Cardinals tie Ball State with UCLA and Oregon State for the fifth‑most alumni in the MLB, underscoring the program’s sustained impact. Their stories also highlight the diverse challenges faced by young athletes transitioning to professional play, from adapting to new environments to managing limited early‑season opportunities.
As the next generation of Cardinals prepares to step onto the diamond, the university’s partnership with Major League Baseball and its robust scouting network continue to foster talent that can compete at the highest level.
