Two Kentucky high school baseball players are now confronting felony accusations after authorities say they brought a loaded firearm and ammunition onto a playing field during a May 11 contest between John Hardin High and Holy Cross.
The discovery came to light when a post on Snapchat prompted administrators at John Hardin High to search one of the students' bags, where they uncovered a Smith & Wesson SD40VE semi‑automatic pistol, a magazine with a custom backplate and three rounds of ammunition.
Both juveniles have been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon on school property and with illegal possession of a handgun as minors; one of them also faces a marijuana possession charge.
While the Radcliff Police Department has taken the lead in filing those charges, officials stress that the incident occurred within Jefferson County, meaning the Louisville Metro Police Department retains primary jurisdiction and has not yet filed its own case.
The cases will be processed through the state's juvenile justice system, where the alleged conduct will be adjudicated under statutes designed for youth offenders.
