As the program looks to climb the rankings, the coaching staff has turned to the freshman class for a spark, and the newest addition is forward Eric Mahaffey, a 6‑foot‑8 prospect from Akron.
A Fresh Face for the Bearcats
Mahaffey arrives after a solid rookie campaign at Akron, where he averaged 7.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting 53 percent from the field and 39.1 percent from three‑point range. He scored in double figures on eleven occasions, highlighted by a 20‑point outing against Iona, and his contributions helped the Zips capture the MAC Tournament title and earn an NCAA Tournament berth.
Head coach Jerrod Calhoun praised the newcomer, noting that Mahaffey’s size, shooting touch and versatility give the Bearcats a different look off the bench. “He brings a level of pedigree and skill that can change the tempo of our second unit,” Calhoun said, emphasizing the player’s potential to stretch defenses and create mismatches.
Advanced metrics, however, paint a more nuanced picture. According to analyst John Hollinger’s Game Score, Mahaffey posted a 7.9 average, below the 10‑point benchmark often associated with impact players. His 75 personal fouls last season also raise questions about defensive discipline, a factor opponents may look to exploit.
Despite those concerns, the coaching staff remains optimistic that the freshman can develop into a reliable scoring option. If Mahaffey can tighten his defensive footwork and maintain his shooting efficiency, he could help the Bearcats push the bench production past the 20‑point mark and contend more aggressively for a deeper NCAA run.
