A Tradition of Talent and Charity
The 52nd edition of the Illinois High School Shrine Game is set to take place this Saturday at Tucci Stadium on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. The annual showcase brings together nearly 100 of the state’s top senior football players for a single, high‑stakes contest.
Six athletes hailing from the Rockford area will be among the participants, each hoping to catch the eye of college recruiters. The group includes running back Gavin Sanders from Auburn, tight end Zy Haverland of Eastland/Pearl City, defensive back Lukas Rossow from Du/Pec, defensive end Hunter DeWall of Forreston, linebacker Brode Metzger from Rochelle, and kicker Leonardo Andrade of Belvidere.
All six were selected after their coaches nominated them and the Illinois Football Coaches Association finalized the rosters. Their inclusion underscores the depth of talent emerging from the Rockford region and adds a local flavor to the statewide event.
Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m., and the game will be broadcast live, giving recruits a platform to demonstrate speed, technique, and versatility. For many, the performance could prove pivotal in shaping their collegiate futures.
Beyond the on‑field drama, the Shrine Game carries a charitable mission. Proceeds benefit Shriners Children’s Hospitals in Chicago and St. Louis, continuing a tradition that blends sport with community service.
The event also highlights the collaborative effort behind the scenes, from the Illinois Wesleyan University campus that hosts the game to the Illinois Football Coaches Association that orchestrates the selection process. As the players take the field, they carry the hopes of their hometowns and the goodwill of a cause that extends far beyond the gridiron.
