Penguins Launch Science Champions Program for Appalachian Elementary Schools

Hockey‑themed lessons aim to boost STEM engagement in West Virginia and Pennsylvania

A new partnership between the West Virginia Public Education Collaborative, the STEAM Technical Assistance Center and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is bringing the excitement of the rink into the classroom. The Pittsburgh Penguins Science Champions initiative will deliver hockey‑themed lessons, hands‑on classroom kits and teacher support to second‑ and third‑graders in under‑served Appalachian schools this fall.

The program aligns with West Virginia’s College and Career Readiness Standards and Pennsylvania’s STEELS framework, ensuring that the curriculum meets state educational requirements while using the fast‑paced nature of hockey to capture student interest.

Teachers in Barbour, Monongalia and Ohio counties have been selected to pilot the effort, and Ashley Sayre, a second‑grade teacher at Eastwood Elementary School in Morgantown, recently tested the “Helmet Heroes” lesson, where students designed and built prototype helmets to protect an egg.

Backed by nearly $100,000 in private philanthropy, the initiative provides high‑quality materials and expects measurable gains in student engagement, a prospect that has already earned praise from fellow West Virginia educators.
