A Life Cut Short: Remembering Kentucky Defensive Lineman Nic Smith

University and coach mourn the death of 20‑year‑old defensive lineman, remembered for his on‑field promise and community spirit

A Life Cut Short

The University of Kentucky announced on Tuesday that 20‑year‑old defensive lineman Nic Smith died from a self‑inflicted gunshot wound, a conclusion reached by the Fayette County Coroner’s Office after a thorough investigation.

Head coach Will Stein took to social media to share a heartfelt message, describing Smith as a bright presence in the locker room and extending his deepest condolences to the player’s family and friends.

Smith, a native of Augusta, Georgia, arrived in Lexington as a consensus three‑star recruit who distinguished himself at Eagle’s Landing High School with 40 tackles, 11 for loss, two sacks and 16 quarterback hurries as a senior.

During his junior year he posted 58 tackles, 8.0 for loss, four sacks, eight quarterback hurries and forced two fumbles, earning the nickname “Happy” among teammates for his upbeat demeanor.

Off the field, Smith was pursuing a degree in community leadership and development, a program he hoped would equip him to give back to his hometown and the university community.

He is survived by his parents, Spencer and Kisha Smith, his sister Genedra Smalls, and a close‑knit circle of siblings including Jackson Roundtree, Killik Smith, Arkeion Smith, Nedra Roundtree, Valencia Murray and Ariana Smith.
