A rising force in Polk County soccer
Lakeland United FC, a USL League Two side, has become a focal point for soccer enthusiasts across Polk County as the summer schedule reaches its climax.
Key players shaping the roster
Mason Dalton, a former Lake Gibson standout, now anchors the midfield and has been named man of the match in two games, helping the club sit third in the South Florida Division with a 3‑3‑1 record. Marcellus McCoy, a former Lake Gibson center back, continues his college career at the University of South Florida while featuring regularly for the side. Breckin Southern, a Lakeland High alumnus, is listed among the bench options after a stint at Eastern Florida State College. Chandler Crawshaw, a Mulberry left‑back, has earned starting spots at Division II Florida Southern College and contributes to the squad’s defensive depth. Jax Rinaldo, a 17‑year‑old high school keeper, rounds out the local contingent as the fifth goalkeeper on the roster.
Coaching vision and future plans
Tauan Salgado, the club’s Director of Recruitment and Placement, emphasizes a dual mission: retain homegrown talent and expand the team’s footprint in Polk County. International signings such as João Filipe Carvalho, the current top scorer, and João Victor Almeida, a three‑year captain and one of the nation’s best defenders, add experience and depth. Both players are set to pursue higher education abroad, with Carvalho heading to Marshall University this fall.
Final home stretch
The club will host its last two home fixtures at Bryant Stadium, with a July 8 matchup against a yet‑to‑be‑named opponent and a July 12 showdown against Fort Lauderdale. The latter game offers a realistic chance at the regular‑season title, and the organization hopes the events will further cement community support and showcase the region’s soccer pipeline.
