A Community in Mourning
A 34‑year‑old travel baseball coach was shot dead outside a barbershop in Birmingham, Alabama, after an argument erupted inside the shop.
The suspect fled the scene but was taken into custody a short distance away, and police confirmed that Fonseca died at the location.
Fonseca had been scheduled to travel with his family to Panama City, Florida the following day to compete in a travel baseball World Series tournament, a plan that now hangs in the balance.
Troy Whetstone, a longtime friend and fellow coach, recalled meeting Fonseca at a batting cage in 2022 and forming a close bond, describing the slain coach as a man with a big heart who inspired every child he coached.
As the head mentor of the Wow Factor 205 nonprofit, Fonseca worked with players who were often labeled as less talented, giving them confidence and a love for the game that many said changed their lives.
Friends and former players are organizing a memorial event to celebrate Fonseca’s legacy, promising to keep his spirit alive on and off the field.
