Tonight at 6 p.m., the city of Mobile, Alabama, will gather at the Mobile Convention Center to unveil the name and logo of its newest professional hockey franchise.
The team, owned by Zawyer Sports and Entertainment, will compete in the Southern Professional Hockey League and will call the soon‑to‑open Regions Arena its home, a venue slated to open its doors in January 2027.
A New Arena Takes Shape
Construction crews completed the vertical framework of Regions Arena earlier this year, and the arena was officially named in April. Renderings of the new signage are expected to be reviewed by the Architectural Review Board this week, marking a concrete step toward the arena’s debut.
Local officials and sports advocates see the franchise as more than a team; they view it as a catalyst for reviving youth hockey programs and fostering regional rivalries, notably with the nearby Pensacola Ice Flyers.
Community Hopes Ride on Ice
Danny Corte of the Mobile Sports Authority says the return of professional hockey could spark new youth leagues and bring fresh energy to the local sports scene. Fans have also voiced enthusiasm for reviving the historic Mobile Mysticks name, a nod to the city’s hockey heritage.
The announcement tonight will set the stage for a busy rollout, with ticket sales, merchandise and community events planned in the months leading up to the arena’s opening.
