BYU‑Idaho Launches Year‑Round Ice Hockey Prep Program

A new initiative led by alumnus Sean Stempinski and volunteer coach Ryan Krunblis aims to fill the off‑season gap in Rexburg.

Year‑Round Hockey Takes Shape at BYU‑Idaho

Campus Recreation announced in May that it will run ice‑hockey prep groups, filling the gap left by the seasonal outdoor rink in Sugar City.

The Neutral Zone, an indoor facility that opened in October 2025 in Rexburg, now serves as the primary venue for these sessions.

Sean Stempinski, who leads floor‑hockey activities on campus, was instrumental in launching the program, while Ryan Krunblis, a BYUI alumnus and local coach, volunteers to guide skill development.

Each Wednesday night, participants gather from 9:15 p.m. to 11 p.m., spending the first hour on drills and the second on scrimmages, with a special women’s night scheduled for June 23.

The groups are open to any eligible student or spouse, regardless of experience, and registration is handled through IM Leagues; additional details appear on the BYUI Sports Instagram page.

Organizers hope the prep program will evolve into a full‑fledged league by the fall semester, offering a continuous pathway for the sport on campus.
