Former Wheaton Football Players Die in Lake Michigan Rescue Attempt

Jalen Shaffer and Philip Lochirco lost their lives while trying to save a teammate; coach reflects on their legacy

A sunny afternoon on the shores of Lake Michigan turned tragic when two former Wheaton College football players found themselves in a fight for survival. Jalen Shaffer, 26, of Grand Rapids, and Philip Lochirco, 24, of Warrenville, were attempting to rescue each other near the Pigeon Lake Channel in Ottawa County when the water claimed them.

A Community Mourns

The two men were pronounced dead at the scene, their lives ending in a place that had once been a venue for recreation and camaraderie. Witnesses described a rapid sequence of events: Lochirco began to struggle, prompting others to intervene, and Shaffer dove in to help, only to disappear beneath the surface.

Emergency responders from the Ottawa County Marine Patrol and the Grand Haven Township Fire Department arrived quickly, pulling one of the men to shore and initiating resuscitation efforts. Despite their best attempts, both men were declared dead, and police reported no indication of foul play.

Wheaton College Head Football Coach Jesse Scott expressed profound grief, describing Shaffer and Lochirco as brothers, teammates and friends whose positive influence extended far beyond the field. He highlighted their commitment to their faith, noting that each wanted others to know and love Jesus.

Shaffer, a business and economics major who played as a linebacker, is scheduled to have a celebration of life on June 19. As of Tuesday morning, no obituary information had been released for Lochirco, a civil engineering and political science major who served as a defensive lineman.

Both young men left a legacy of teamwork, perseverance and spiritual conviction. Their story serves as a reminder of the bonds forged through sport and the profound impact of living a life guided by purpose and faith.
