A 34‑year‑old travel baseball coach was gunned down inside a Birmingham barbershop on a recent Saturday, leaving a community stunned and authorities searching for answers.
According to witnesses, Jorge Fonseca got into an altercation with another man inside the shop. The suspect produced a firearm and shot Fonseca, who died at the scene despite life‑saving attempts. Police later arrested the suspect at a separate location.
Fonseca had been traveling with his wife and children to Panama City, Florida, the next day to compete in a World Series baseball tournament, a trip that would have taken his family to the Gulf Coast for the first time in years.
The news reached his close friend Troy Whetstone, who rushed to the scene after receiving a call from Fonseca’s wife. Whetstone, who first met Fonseca at a local batting cage in 2022, recalled how the two men bonded over coaching their sons and later collaborated through the nonprofit Wow Factor 205.
Whetstone described Fonseca as a coach with a big heart who inspired countless kids, especially those labeled as less talented on the field. He emphasized that Fonseca’s dedication extended beyond the diamond, shaping lives through love and mentorship.
A Legacy That Lives On
Many of Fonseca’s players, who affectionately called him ‘Coach George,’ were between seven and nine years old. Their grief was palpable, and Whetstone has begun assembling an album of photos and videos to honor his friend, while also planning a community event to celebrate his legacy.
