A new adult flag football league for men over 30 has officially started in Swampscott, drawing 41 participants who will compete on Tuesday evenings at Blocksidge Field throughout the summer.
The league is the brainchild of local resident Tom Layte, who teamed up with the Swampscott Recreation Department to launch the competition as part of the town’s summer sports program.
In their first match, Layte’s team, called 'The Swamp,' fell 32‑18, but the founder remains confident that the squad will tighten up and improve as the season progresses.
Community Impact
Recreation Director Charlotte Daher de Garcia highlighted the importance of adult recreation for community building, noting that more than 230 adults will take part in the summer flag football and softball leagues combined.
The initiative also brings variety to the town’s athletic calendar, with adult softball set to start on Wednesday and women’s flag football slated for Thursday, creating a full slate of recreational options.
Looking Forward
Each team will play six regular‑season games before the playoffs begin in August, and all four teams are slated to qualify for the postseason. Organizers hope the inaugural season will set a precedent for future adult sports offerings in Swampscott, encouraging more residents to join the growing recreational movement.
