A Fresh Coaching Direction for the Durango Demons
The Durango High School boys basketball program has named Orlando Griego as its new head coach, filling the vacancy left by Alan Batiste, who retired after a 13‑year tenure. Griego, a Durango native and 2003 graduate of the school, returns after a period of growth that includes a recent role as an assistant under Batiste and a stint as the Fort Lewis College women’s basketball coach from 2019 to 2021.
Griego’s basketball journey began on the courts of Durango High, continued at Cochise College and Southern Utah University, and later led him to the sidelines of Fort Lewis College. His playing background, combined with years of mentorship, gave him a reputation for developing young talent and emphasizing personal growth alongside skill development.
The hiring process was overseen by Ryan Knorr, the Durango School District Athletic and Activities Director, who highlighted Griego’s character and the strong community feedback he received. Knorr noted that the decision was based on Griego’s current conduct and the confidence placed in him by local stakeholders, rather than past controversies.
Griego’s departure from Fort Lewis College followed an internal review and player complaints, but he has since reflected on that period, describing it as a catalyst for change. He now approaches coaching with a more measured style, emphasizing aggressive defense, disciplined play, and the holistic development of each athlete.
Beyond the X’s and O’s, Griego intends to serve as a mentor, drawing on his experience as a Title VI Coordinator for Native American education and his long‑standing commitment to youth programs. He believes that basketball can be a vehicle for teaching life lessons, a philosophy that resonates with parents, players, and alumni eager to see the Demons reclaim their competitive edge.
The broader Durango basketball community is abuzz with optimism. Fans and former players alike see Griego’s appointment as a homecoming that could revitalize the program’s culture and performance. With a blend of local roots, coaching experience, and a clear vision for the future, Griego is poised to lead the Demons into a new chapter of growth and success.
