Netflix has entered a partnership with Goalhanger to launch a daily World Cup programme called The Rest Is Football, a show that will run throughout the tournament and feature former England internationals Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards as hosts.
The production, which employs roughly 150 staff members, combines pre‑recorded segments filmed at team training sites with live reporting from the ground, delivering a mix of analysis, behind‑the‑scenes access and moments that range from wine‑filled conversations to unfiltered commentary.
Although the programme does not hold rights to live match footage or official highlights, its creators aim to engage soccer enthusiasts worldwide, with a particular focus on the United States where the blend of sport and informal banter offers content that traditional broadcast television rarely provides.
Financial backing and future plans
The financial commitment underscores Netflix’s broader strategy to expand its sports portfolio; industry reports indicate the streaming giant paid roughly £14 million to secure the rights, while Goalhanger announced an investment from The Chernin Group to accelerate its growth in the U.S. market.
After the final whistle, the presenting team will return to England to continue the conversation on YouTube, and Netflix plans to further broaden its sports offering by adding Major League Baseball games and expanding its National Football League slate.
