Bennett Konkey, a 6‑foot‑3, 205‑pound prospect in the class of 2027, revealed his college decision on Tuesday, choosing the Illinois Fighting Illini over offers from Iowa, Indiana, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Duke, Iowa State and Syracuse. The commitment marks a significant win for the Illini as they continue to build momentum in the recruiting market.
A Homegrown Talent’s Decision
Ranked No. 238 overall and No. 35 among wide receivers nationally, Konkey also holds the distinction of being the twelfth‑best prospect in Illinois. His junior season was prolific, as he recorded 41 receptions for 739 yards and nine touchdowns across nine games, showcasing a blend of size, speed and route‑running precision that attracted multiple Power Five programs.
Although he traveled to Iowa for an official visit, the home‑state connection proved decisive. Illinois coaches emphasized the opportunity to stay close to family and contribute to a rising program, a narrative that resonated throughout his recruitment.
The Illini’s staff, led by head coach Bret Bielema, highlighted Konkey’s potential to stretch the field and provide a deep‑threat option in the offense. “Bennett brings a rare combination of length and hands,” Bielema said in a statement. “We’re excited to see him develop under our program.”
Konkey’s pledge is expected to influence other recruits in the region, reinforcing Illinois’ reputation as a fertile ground for top talent. With his skill set and work ethic, the Fighting Illini hope to translate his high school success into collegiate production that can compete in the Big Ten.
