Section 2 Flag Football All-Stars Shine
The Times Union has released its annual flag football All-Star selections, spotlighting the athletes and mentors who defined a thrilling year across Section 2. From dominant offensive displays to lockdown defenses, the honorees reflect the depth of talent that has pushed local programs to new heights.
Eleanor Keough of Shaker earned Offensive Player of the Year after steering her squad to a Section 2 Class A championship and a state final appearance. She threw for 176 completions covering 1,569 yards and 22 touchdowns while also rushing for 778 yards and nine scores, underscoring her dual-threat impact.
Defensive standout Gabby Spraker from Shenendehowa was crowned Defensive Player of the Year. Her relentless pass rush and ball-hawking instincts helped the team tighten up a previously porous secondary, turning games that could have slipped away into decisive victories.
Coach Leigh Stevens, also from Shaker, captured Coach of the Year honors. Under his guidance the team posted a 12-game winning streak, culminating in a state championship game berth. Stevens' ability to blend aggressive play-calling with disciplined fundamentals has been credited as the catalyst behind the program's meteoric rise.
Other key contributors included MacPherson, a Shaker junior who emerged as one of the section’s most dynamic receivers, and Walcott, a Colonie senior whose all‑purpose skill set helped the Wolf Pack to a 10‑game winning streak and their first ever appearance in the Class A final. Meanwhile, DiBacco from Holy Trinity led the Pride to an undefeated regular season and a second straight trip to the Class B final, while Rundell from Colonie excelled at both quarterback and defensive back, anchoring a balanced attack.
The recognition extends beyond individual accolades, reflecting a broader surge in competitiveness across the region. Programs such as Albany’s Falcons and Troy’s Flying Horses have posted impressive offensive numbers, including a Troy senior who amassed 878 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, propelling his team to the Class B final.
With the season now in the books, the All‑Stars serve as a springboard for next year’s ambitions. Players and coaches alike will look to build on these achievements, aiming to translate early‑season momentum into deeper playoff runs and, ultimately, state titles.
