Hunter Haug Commits to Texas Tech, Bolstering 2027 Class

Four‑star safety chooses Lubbock over Power Five suitors, bringing elite versatility to the Red Raiders

Texas Tech University announced Wednesday that four‑star safety Hunter Haug has pledged to join the Red Raiders as part of the 2027 recruiting class, marking a significant addition to the program’s defensive backfield.

Haug, listed as the No. 10 overall athlete in the nation by 247Sports, had been courted by several Power Five programs, including TCU, Arkansas and Baylor, before narrowing his focus to Lubbock.

During the 2025 season, Haug helped Smithson Valley High School capture the state championship, amassing 2,053 all‑purpose yards while contributing 1,156 yards and 16 touchdowns on offense, and adding 57 tackles, an interception, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery on defense.

Coach Joey McGuire praised the recruit’s versatility, noting that Haug’s ability to impact the game both as a receiver and a defender aligns with the Red Raiders’ evolving scheme.

A boost for the Red Raiders' future

The commitment not only bolsters Texas Tech’s recruiting class but also signals the program’s growing appeal among elite prospects in the region, a trend that could reverberate across the Big 12 conference.
