The Grafton High School girls' soccer team saw its season come to an abrupt close on a chilly evening, dropping a 2‑1 decision to New Berlin West in the Division 3 sectional semifinal.
A Goal in the Final Minutes
With less than four minutes remaining, New Berlin West broke the deadlock after a foul resulted in a deflected direct kick, sending the ball past the outstretched hands of the Grafton keeper.
The match had been delayed by four hours due to storms, a factor that players and coaches felt may have impacted the rhythm of the game.
Senior Olivia Ruff spoke of the team's effort and the sudden turn of events, while senior Brayleigh Sumner noted improved possession and chances in the second half.
Coach Jason Rogers praised the heart his squad displayed, highlighted the importance of taking chances, and said the loss could serve as motivation for the underclassmen.
Katelyn Valenta, the team’s leading scorer, managed a goal after a penalty‑kick rebound, but the defense was smothered in the second half.
Looking Ahead
Rogers hopes the playoff loss will inspire the remaining players to build on the momentum and aim for another deep run next season, even as the squad will lose key seniors to graduation while returning a strong core.
