A New Era for Collegiate Flag Football
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has officially approved women's flag football as its 30th championship sport, elevating the competition from an invitational format to a full‑scale championship beginning with the 2026‑27 academic year. The inaugural NAIA Women's Flag Football National Championship is slated for spring 2027, signaling a historic milestone for the sport.
Since the program’s launch in 2021, participation has surged, with roughly 60 institutions slated to sponsor the sport in the upcoming year. The NAIA, in partnership with the NFL, has built the infrastructure and support networks necessary for sustained growth, positioning flag football as a cornerstone of emerging collegiate athletics.
NAIA President and CEO Jim Carr emphasized that the elevation reflects a commitment to expanding opportunities for female student‑athletes. “This move not only validates the sport but also underscores our dedication to fostering competitive pathways that elevate the game,” Carr said.
Austin Bennett, NAIA Vice President for Championships, highlighted the remarkable trajectory of the sport over the past five years, noting that what began as an emerging concept has now become a nationally recognized championship discipline.
The championship event is expected to draw teams from across the country, with Kansas City, Missouri, serving as a focal point for early planning and logistics. The city’s central location and sports infrastructure make it a natural hub for the inaugural tournament.
