A Strategic Boost for the Golden Eagles
Southern Miss baseball has added its fourth transfer player to the 2026 roster, confirming the arrival of Brock Clayton, a 6‑foot‑3, 215‑pound redshirt sophomore who can handle both catcher and outfield duties.
Clayton arrives after a standout season at Northwest Florida State College, where he posted a .353 batting average, hit nine home runs and drove in 42 runs. His blend of power and contact made him a first‑team All‑Panhandle Conference selection as an outfielder.
The move also rekindles a familiar storyline: on Feb. 27 Clayton launched a solo home run off Pearl River pitcher and fellow Southern Miss transfer commit Drew Harrison, a moment that highlighted his ability to perform under pressure. A week later, against Gulf Coast State College, he went 4‑for‑4, added two homers, drove in six runs and stole two bases.
His addition comes as the Golden Eagles prepare for a competitive season, with the new class also featuring Cannon Peery, a first‑baseman from Grand Canyon University, and Cade Baker, an outfielder from the University of Toledo. Together they form a promising infusion of talent aimed at restoring the program’s recent form.
The roster reshuffle is not without departures; Southern Miss players Jace Norton, McCarty English, Brooks Willoughby, Jake Neely and Camden Rodgers have all announced intentions to transfer. English, who recently committed to the University of Arizona, exemplifies the fluid movement of talent across collegiate programs.
Coach Kevin Schnall, who has been instrumental in recruiting these transfers, emphasized that the team is building a versatile, depth‑rich squad capable of contending in the Sun Belt Conference. The incoming transfers bring a mix of power, speed and defensive flexibility that could reshape the Golden Eagles’ outlook.
