A New Chapter for Guerrero
Gerry Guerrero, a 6‑foot‑3 guard standing 185 pounds, has officially committed to the Canisius College men’s basketball program for the 2026‑27 season. The announcement was made on May 15, 2026, and marks the latest step in a journey that began in the basketball‑rich city of Tepic, Mexico.
Guerrero’s collegiate path led him to the College of Southern Idaho, where he spent two seasons and helped the team finish 22‑10 overall and reach the NJCAA Region 18 championship game. In his first year at CSI he averaged 6.0 points per game, contributing to a successful campaign that ended with a regional title game appearance.
Beyond domestic play, Guerrero represented Mexico at the 2022 FIBA U18 AmeriCup, logging 16.2 minutes per game and showcasing his ability on an international stage. In a quarterfinal loss to the United States he pulled down a team‑high seven rebounds, and in a consolation win over Ecuador he scored 12 points in just 17 minutes.
Eligibility and Expectations
With three seasons of eligibility remaining, Guerrero is expected to add depth and experience to a Griffs squad looking to build on recent progress. Head coach Jim Christian, who announced the signing, highlighted Guerrero’s size, work ethic and versatility as key assets for the program’s next chapter.
The Griffs’ athletic department expressed enthusiasm about the addition, noting that Guerrero’s background and competitive experience should translate well to the NCAA Division I environment. Fans can look forward to seeing how the 6‑foot‑3 guard integrates into the team’s system as the upcoming season approaches.
