A Commitment That Signals Momentum
Keyon Thomas, a three-star running back from Indianapolis, announced his commitment to the University of Iowa on Tuesday, choosing the Hawkeyes over Illinois, Michigan State, Cincinnati and UConn. The decision underscores the program's growing appeal within the 2027 recruiting cycle.
During his junior season Thomas recorded 1,337 rushing yards on 168 carries and scored 19 touchdowns, while also adding 184 receiving yards and delivering 100-yard performances in seven games. His all-around production made him one of the most versatile backs in the state.
Thomas praised the coaching staff's emphasis on player development, singling out running backs coach Jay Norvell, who is in his first year leading the position. "Their plan for growth and the relationships they build with players were decisive," he said in a statement.
The commitment brings the total number of pledges in Iowa's 2027 class to 13, joining a group that already includes juniors Kamari Moulton and LJ Phillips Jr., as well as underclassmen Xavier Williams and Nathan McNeil. The class is noted for its depth across multiple positions.
Analysts view Thomas's addition as a boost to a backfield that is already crowded with talent. His ability to contribute both as a rusher and a receiver is expected to deepen the Hawkeyes' offensive options and maintain a strong ground attack in the coming seasons.
