A New Chapter for CNU Basketball
Jarren Dyson has been named the new head coach of the Christopher Newport University men’s basketball program, taking the reins of a team that has become a national contender in recent years.
A Yorktown native, Dyson returns to Virginia after three seasons at Army West Point, where he rose to associate head coach and helped guide the Cadets to their first NCAA Division III championship in 2023.
His coaching journey includes stints at Lafayette College and Tabb High School, his alma mater, as well as a standout playing career at Emory & Henry, where he set school records for assists and earned MVP honors.
Dyson’s impact is evident in the Captains’ recent achievements: two Final Fours, three Sweet 16 appearances, four conference championships, and a historic run that culminated in the program’s inaugural Division III national title.
John Krikorian, who coached the team for 15 seasons, praised Dyson’s work ethic and the influence he has had on recruiting and developing all‑conference talent.
Athletic director Fran O’Hanlon highlighted Dyson’s strong work ethic and his role as a model for student‑athletes, while Tom Theodorakis commended his ability to mentor cadet‑athletes at West Point.
Off the court, Dyson and his wife Casey are parents to a daughter named Riley, adding a personal dimension to his public profile.
