Quincy University’s Junior Hawks Camp Builds Community and Resilience

Coaches and campers highlight fun, hard work, and perseverance at the annual basketball camp

Quincy University’s women’s basketball program opened its doors this summer to a group of young athletes eager to learn and connect. The Junior Hawks basketball camp blended skill drills with team‑building activities, creating an environment where fundamentals met community spirit.

More Than a Weekend of Play

Under the guidance of head coach Ali Schwagmeyer‑Belger and her staff, the camp emphasized perseverance and hard work while keeping the atmosphere light and enjoyable. Schwagmeyer‑Belger stressed that the camp’s core mission is to bring the community together in a fun, learning‑focused environment, where mistakes are seen as stepping stones.

Campers such as Brinley Davis and Madison Kassing praised the energetic atmosphere, noting that the mix of instruction and camaraderie turned each drill into a chance to grow. They appreciated the opportunity to meet and look up to college basketball players, gaining inspiration beyond the court.

Sydney Compton, a sophomore forward for QU, hopes campers walk away with a deeper appreciation for hard work and perseverance. Maddie Casey, a sophomore guard who once attended similar camps, sees herself as a role model for the next generation, sharing the lessons she learned about resilience and continuous improvement.

Beyond the court, the experience left lasting impressions, with many youngsters internalizing the message to keep getting back up after setbacks. The camp proved to be more than a weekend of basketball; it became a platform for personal growth and community connection.
