Two local nonprofit organizations, Girls Soccer Worldwide (GSW) and Boys Impact Leadership Team, have combined their expertise to create a four‑day summer program that uses soccer as a platform for teaching leadership skills to children between eight and twelve years old.
Program details and schedule
The Grassroots Leadership Program runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on June 29, 30 and July 1, 2, and 9 at Kellman Park in Livermore, California. Families can enroll their children for the full session at a cost of $125, or attend individual days for $35 each.
Leadership curriculum and mentorship
The initiative weaves soccer, mentorship and interactive leadership activities into a curriculum built around four pillars: confidence, courage, character and compassion. Teen mentors from nearby high schools, including athletes from Granada and Foothill high schools, co‑develop challenges that require communication, cooperation and problem‑solving.
Community impact and accessibility
Proceeds from the summer program support GSW’s free Grassroots Leadership Program for girls in underserved Livermore communities, including participants from Title 1 schools such as Junction Avenue and the Marylin Avenue STEAM Academy, as well as students from Jackson Elementary School. No child will be turned away for financial reasons, and families can request assistance directly from GSW. More information is available at girlssoccerworldwide.org.
