A Strategic Hire for the Hokies
Virginia Tech announced this week that Josh Reynolds will serve as Director of Pitching Performance and Baseball Analytics, a position designed to elevate the program’s mound operations through data‑driven insight and player development.
Reynolds arrives with more than fifteen years of experience that blends playing, coaching and scouting at the collegiate level, giving him a rare perspective on both the technical and human sides of the game.
His career includes assistant coaching roles at the University of Tennessee, Northwestern University and the University of Cincinnati, where he helped guide pitching staffs to national recognition and record‑setting performances.
At Tennessee, the 2025 staff ranked second nationally in strikeouts per nine innings, underscoring Reynolds’ ability to translate analytics into on‑field results.
During his tenure at Cincinnati, he oversaw the program’s lowest earned‑run average since 2019 and steered the team to its first 30‑win season in 2024, a milestone that highlighted his impact on both performance and culture.
Head coach John Szefc, who has led the Hokies for several seasons, praised Reynolds’ blend of technical expertise and scouting insight, calling the hire a ‘significant addition’ to the pitching operation and a key step toward sustained competitiveness.
Reynolds, a former MLB draft pick who never reached the majors, previously served as Scouting Director with the Colorado Rockies, bringing a deep network of talent evaluation to the department and strengthening the program’s player development pipeline.
The appointment aligns Virginia Tech with a network of partner institutions — including Tennessee, Northwestern, Cincinnati, Kansas State, Evansville and Northeast Texas Community College — each of which has contributed to recent discussions about expanding the program’s analytical capabilities.
