Stormy Setback, Bright Outlook
A powerful tornado tore through the area, flattening the baseball field at Andrean High School and scattering equipment, forcing the 59ers to confront a damaged facility just weeks before the Class 3A state championship.
Andrean’s coach, Dave Pishkur, confirmed the team has not returned to campus since the storm, instead holding practices at nearby fields and community venues while the school arranges temporary solutions.
The 59ers, however, are not deterred. They are preparing to face Guerin Catholic in the Class 3A championship, a rematch that could tie the program’s record of nine state titles earned since 2004.
A few miles away, Kouts High School also felt the tornado’s impact. Though its own field survived, the school’s proximity to the storm’s path has united the community around the team’s own championship run in Class 1A.
Kouts’ head coach, Jason Dorhorst, described how the tornado touched down a quarter‑mile from a subdivision where several players reside, underscoring the personal stakes for the squad.
At the heart of Kouts’ pitching staff is sophomore Billy Miller, who has emerged as a dual threat. Miller boasts a .514 batting average with 45 RBIs and a 0.42 ERA, while his fastball regularly hits 90 mph, complemented by a sharp changeup and curveball.
Both teams are leveraging experienced rosters and deep talent pools. Andrean returns several members from last season’s championship‑winning lineup, while Kouts relies on Miller’s ace performance to anchor its rotation.
The upcoming state finals promise a compelling clash of resilience and skill, as each program transforms adversity into motivation heading into the championship games.
