Texas Tech University announced this week that its baseball and softball programs have completed a sweeping set of facility upgrades designed to elevate the gameday experience for fans and athletes alike. The improvements span both venues, blending modern amenities with enhanced playing surfaces.
At Rocky Johnson Field, the softball program now boasts new fan amenities including a striking awning and protective netting that shield spectators from the elements. The outfield wall has been refreshed with updated branding that reinforces the team’s identity, while a state‑of‑the‑art Musco LED lighting system bathes the field in a vibrant gameday atmosphere.
The clubhouse interior received a makeover as well, showcasing updated photographs and an All‑America wall that celebrates past achievements. These touches aim to deepen the connection between current rosters and the program’s rich history.
A New Era for Red Raiders Athletics
Baseball’s home venue, Rip Griffin Park, now features a brand‑new playing field supplied by Shaw Sports Turf. The synthetic turf system incorporates sand and natural infill, delivering a consistent surface that mimics natural grass while withstanding heavy use. This installation marks a significant step forward for the program’s competitive aspirations.
The upgrades would not have been possible without the generosity of John and Tracy Sellers. John Sellers, co‑founder and co‑CEO of Double Eagle Holdings, an oil and gas enterprise, and his wife Tracy, a former Texas Tech softball player from 2001‑2003, contributed substantially to the project. Their support reflects a deep personal commitment to the university’s athletic community.
Kirby Hocutt, Texas Tech’s athletic director, highlighted the strategic importance of these investments, noting that modern facilities are essential for recruiting top talent and providing a world‑class environment for student‑athletes. Head coaches Gerry Glasco of the softball team and Tim Tadlock of the baseball team echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how the enhancements will translate into stronger performances on the field.
Looking Ahead to the Upcoming Seasons
The baseball squad is slated to open its home schedule with a series against Albany, promising early excitement for fans eager to see the new turf in action. Meanwhile, the softball team will host its home opener later in February as part of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, marking the first chance for the community to experience the revamped amenities.
Both programs are poised to leverage these upgrades as they aim for competitive success in the coming months. The combination of improved facilities, strategic donor support, and focused leadership sets a promising foundation for the Red Raiders’ athletic endeavors.
