A group of teammates from the Cleary University women’s soccer program have started a GoFundMe campaign to aid Karliana Perdomo, a senior business student who remains in ICE custody while her asylum case proceeds.
A Call for Justice on the Field
Perdomo, a native of Venezuela, arrived in the United States on a temporary protective status and has been pursuing her degree while balancing soccer and academics. She completed high school with honors at Western International High School and earned an associate’s degree at St. Clair Community College before joining Cleary.
Her detention occurred during a routine traffic stop in Detroit, after which she was transferred to a detention center and now faces an immigration hearing that could determine her future in the country.
Teammates describe her as hardworking, caring and self‑less, noting that she always puts others first and brings a positive spirit to the locker room.
University President Alan Drimmer expressed deep concern for her well‑being, emphasizing that she is a valued member of the campus community and that her removal would be a loss for everyone.
The fundraising effort aims to cover the bond required for her release and the legal costs associated with her asylum petition. Any surplus contributions will be earmarked for scholarships in her name, ensuring that her legacy of service continues.
Beyond the immediate financial goal, the campaign underscores a broader commitment to protect a young scholar whose story reflects both the challenges faced by immigrants and the power of collective action.
