A season defined by standout performances
The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star have released the 2026 Foothills' Finest all‑area baseball team, a tribute to the best high school players across Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties. The honor roll was compiled after a rigorous process that combined coaches’ nominations with editorial research, ensuring that each selection met strict positional and statistical benchmarks.
Among the honorees, Luke Rayfield of Crest earned the distinction of All‑Foothills area Player of the Year. Rayfield’s .425 batting average, 30 RBIs and 12 stolen bases helped Crest capture the conference title, a performance that coaches described as the cornerstone of the team’s success.
Parker Williams from North Lincoln was named Pitcher of the Year after posting a 1.85 ERA and 95 strikeouts over 70 innings. His dominance on the mound was a key factor in North Lincoln’s deep playoff run, and his composure in high‑pressure games earned praise from both teammates and opponents.
Evan Wise of South Point received Coach of the Year honors for guiding his squad to a 22‑win season and a regional championship. Wise’s emphasis on disciplined hitting and strategic pitching rotations transformed the team’s dynamics, a turnaround that players attribute to his hands‑on mentorship.
The first‑team roster also features a host of other standouts, including Canton Bare, Josh Beam, Brock Bumgardner, Brian Buttrick, Christian Cherry, Max Davis, Elliott Dellinger, Drew Dixon, Zane Dodd, Greyson Evans, Cole Hendrickson, Hudson Lund, Jack Scholz, Tucker Sigmon, Gavin Smith and Cooper Summerlin. Each of these athletes contributed significantly, whether through power hitting, solid defense or versatile utility roles.
Honorable mentions from the counties of Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln further illustrate the depth of talent in the region, underscoring the competitive balance that defines the Foothills' baseball landscape.
Beyond individual accolades, the selections reflect a broader commitment to celebrating the tri‑county’s best athletes at season’s end, a tradition that the Gazette and Star hope will inspire future generations of players.
