A Legacy of Excellence on the Field
On June 11, the Ballston Spa Soccer Club 2009 Girls team celebrated a historic victory, clinching the Richard Christiano Cup for the third consecutive year. Coach Andrew Werner, who was named Eastern New York’s 2020 Girls Competitive Coach of the Year, emphasized the team's deep community roots and the unwavering support of parents that have fueled their success.
The achievement comes after a grueling season in which the squad overcame four serious injuries to key players, yet still captured the North Atlantic Premier Division title this spring. Their resilience has become a hallmark of the program, reflecting a culture built on perseverance and collective effort.
Looking ahead, the team will represent the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association at the National Tournament in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, scheduled for July 13‑20. Preparation has included participation in the Mad Dog College Showcase in Saratoga Springs and friendly matches against boys' teams to sharpen their competitive edge.
Richard Christiano, the namesake of the cup and longtime ENYYSA President, has guided the association with a focus on fiscal responsibility over the past 17 years. A former youth coach for the New Hyde Park Wildcats and a 14‑year veteran of the Long Island Junior Soccer League Board of Directors, Christiano’s leadership has helped shape the environment that nurtures teams like Ballston Spa.
The club’s journey began in the Capital District Youth Soccer League as a Girls‑Under‑8 side, later competing in the Eastern Development Program when the players reached Girls‑Under‑12. Their progression illustrates a clear pathway for young athletes in the region, blending local development with elite competition.
