A new era for Wildcat baseball
Jonathan Hernandez, the longtime head coach of Bethune‑Cookman’s baseball program, has agreed to a contract extension that will keep him at the helm through the 2030 season. The deal was announced amid a wave of celebration for the coach’s recent record of sustained excellence.
Under Hernandez’s guidance the Wildcats have posted four straight seasons with at least 30 victories, captured back‑to‑back SWAC Regular Season Championships and earned multiple Coach of the Year honors. In 2026 the team set a program record with 37 wins, highlighted by upset victories over SEC powerhouses Florida and LSU.
The 2025 campaign culminated in a 37‑23 overall record and a 24‑5 mark in conference play, securing the SWAC Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional. Hernandez’s tenure has also seen him climb to second place on the university’s all‑time wins list.
Beyond the scoreboard, Hernandez has overseen the development of numerous award‑winning student‑athletes, including SWAC Player of the Year, Co‑Hitter of the Year and Newcomer of the Year recipients. Former pitcher Nolan Santos became the first Wildcat selected in the MLB Draft since 2019 under his tutelage.
Hernandez’s influence extends to national platforms. He was named an assistant coach for the inaugural World Collegiate Baseball Championship in Taichung City, Taiwan, scheduled for July 11‑15, 2026, and previously participated in the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team training camp in 2025.

With the new contract in place, Hernandez aims to maintain the Wildcats’ upward trajectory and to continue producing talent that competes at the highest levels of collegiate and professional baseball.
