A Commitment With Far‑Reaching Implications
Nolan Fitzhenry, the Herald’s No. 1‑ranked U.S.-born prospect for the 2027‑28 college hockey class, announced his commitment to the University of North Dakota on Wednesday, electing to join the Fighting Hawks over the Gophers of Minnesota.
The 18‑year‑old forward from Andover, Minnesota, capped a breakout season with the U.S. Under‑17 Team, leading that squad with 21 goals and ranking second in points with 45 across 51 games. His performance earned a call‑up to the Under‑18 national team, where he represented the United States at the IIHF World Under‑18 Championship in Slovakia.
Scouts have drawn parallels between Fitzhenry’s style and that of former NHL star Zach Parise, noting his ability to score around the net, his competitiveness and his versatility in all game situations. The Athletic’s early 2027 mock draft currently projects him as the No. 12 overall pick, underscoring the high expectations surrounding his development.
Fitzhenry became eligible to sign a letter of intent on Aug. 1, 2025, but he deliberately extended his recruitment timeline, weighing each program’s academic offerings, coaching staff and player development pathways. In recent weeks, UND head coach Dane Jackson and associate head coach Matt Smaby visited the youngster, reinforcing the university’s personal touch.
His pledge adds to a historic recruiting class for the Fighting Hawks, which now boasts three commitments from the same birth year of the U.S. National Team Development Program — including defensemen Beck Thoreson and Carson Scott. The influx of top talent signals a potential resurgence for a program that has long chased national relevance.
