Five Alabama State University baseball standouts have been selected for the fourth annual HBCU Swingman Classic, a showcase that highlights the nation’s top talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Committee and Broadcast Details
The players were chosen by a committee that includes Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. and representatives from Major League Baseball. The event will be broadcast exclusively by MLB Network, ensuring nationwide exposure for the participants.
The rosters consist of 50 of the finest prospects from across the HBCU landscape, forming two teams that will be led by former MLB stars Jimmy Rollins and Rickie Weeks. Their involvement adds a layer of mentorship and historic significance to the competition.
Among the Alabama State representatives, Miguel Oropeza earned the 2026 SWAC Newcomer of the Year honor and secured a spot on the First Team All-SWAC. Jorhan LaBoy also received First Team All-SWAC recognition, while Trey Callaway and Niguel Jenkins were placed on the Second Team All-SWAC.
The selection underscores the growing platform for HBCU athletes, offering them a national stage to display their abilities ahead of professional opportunities. With the game scheduled for July 10 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, the event promises to be a landmark moment for collegiate baseball in the Black community.
