The College Baseball Hall of Fame recently announced the induction of two Tucson legends, Dave Stegman and Brent Strom, honoring careers that have shaped the sport at both the collegiate and professional levels.
Stegman's College Glory
Stegman led the University of Arizona to the 1976 College World Series title, earning three‑time All‑American honors and being named the team's Most Valuable Player that year. His name still appears in the program's record books for single‑season games played, runs scored and hits recorded.
The Detroit Tigers selected him with the second overall pick in the 1976 MLB Draft, and he went on to play six seasons in the majors for the Tigers, the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox. In 1981 he was inducted into the University of Arizona Athletics Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the program's all‑time greats.
Strom's Coaching Legacy
Brent Strom, a longtime Tucson resident, made his mark as a pitching coach at the University of Southern California, where he helped the Trojans capture two College World Series championships as a right‑handed pitcher. He later served on the staff of the Tucson Toros, guiding the club to PCL titles in 1991 and 1993, and he founded the Strom Pitching Institute, a training camp that became a staple for aspiring arms in the region.
Beyond the diamond, Strom and his wife made Tucson their home, spending offseason months there and building a community around baseball development that still influences local players today.
The Hall of Fame ceremony will bring together former teammates, colleagues and fans to celebrate these contributions, reminding the baseball world that the sport's richest stories often unfold in the heart of Tucson.
