Swedish Fans Celebrate in Houston Ahead of World Cup Clash
A group of Swedish soccer enthusiasts gathered in Houston this week to play a friendly match, marking the latest expression of the country's growing fan culture in the city ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The game took place at Blue Ridge Park in Southwest Houston, a venue chosen by local soccer group HTX Soccer, which partnered with the visitors to organize the event. Organizers said the match was part of a broader effort to build cross‑cultural connections and showcase Houston's renowned hospitality.
Johnny Persson, vice president of Camp Sweden, described the atmosphere as a celebration of camaraderie, noting that fans celebrated each goal by mimicking striker Viktor Gyökeres' signature pose. “It’s all about fun and togetherness,” Persson said.
David Vaengelin, another supporter, praised the warm Texas weather, while David Deverteuil, operations director for HTX Soccer, helped coordinate logistics and set up the field.
Midsummer Festivities and a Fan March
The gathering will be followed by a Midsummer Party and a fan march that will start at Helix Park and officially kick off at 9:30 a.m. The march is expected to draw hundreds of participants as they make their way toward the stadium where Sweden will face the Netherlands.
The Netherlands‑Sweden match is the third of seven World Cup games scheduled to be held in Houston, underscoring the city's growing role in the tournament. Sweden arrives after a dominant 5‑1 victory over Tunisia, a performance that has raised expectations among the traveling contingent.
Vaengelin and his friends plan to extend their stay, traveling to North Texas for Sweden's next group‑stage match, further cementing the city's importance as a hub for Swedish supporters.
