UMass names Scott Holsopple as new Sports Performance Coach

Veteran strength specialist brings decades of elite training experience to the Minutemen

UMass announced this week that Scott Holsopple will take on the role of Sports Performance Coach for the Minutemen men's basketball program, a move that underscores the university's commitment to elevating its athletic conditioning standards.

A career built on excellence

Holsopple arrives with a 28‑year résumé that spans strength and conditioning roles at some of the nation's most prominent programs, including the University of Florida, Georgia State, the University of Kansas and Tennessee State.

During his tenure at Tennessee State, he served as Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Performance, overseeing both football and Olympic‑sport conditioning programs and helping the team reach the 2024 FCS Playoffs.

His earlier stint at the University of New Mexico (2019‑20) saw him direct the overall sports performance strategy, while his years at Georgia State (2015‑19) were marked by the program's first-ever bowl victory.

At Kansas (2012‑15) he shaped the football strength program, and his foundational work at the University of Florida contributed to the Gators' 2008 BCS National Championship.

Holsopple also worked with future Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade at Marquette, and he has trained a host of high‑profile athletes such as Tim Tebow, Percy Harvin, Mike Pouncey and Maurice Pouncey.

Coach Martin’s endorsement

Head coach Frank Martin expressed enthusiasm for the hire, noting that Holsopple’s extensive knowledge and proven track record will be invaluable as the program seeks to sharpen its competitive edge.

Martin highlighted the coach’s ability to blend scientific rigor with practical experience, a combination he believes will translate into stronger, more resilient players on the court.

The appointment comes at a time when UMass is looking to rebuild momentum after a challenging season, and the administration hopes the new performance chief will help lay a foundation for sustained success.

Looking forward

With Holsopple’s arrival, the Minutemen aim to integrate cutting‑edge training methodologies and individualized conditioning plans, a strategy that could reshape the team's approach to preparation and recovery.

Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the new staff influences recruiting, player development and overall game performance in the coming seasons.
