A Fresh Coaching Landscape
UTEP's men's basketball program unveiled a significant staff overhaul ahead of the 2026‑27 campaign, welcoming Patrice Days and Joseph Jones as assistant coaches while promoting Drew Lakey to a full‑time role. The moves signal a strategic push to deepen expertise in player development, scouting, and analytics.
Patrice Days arrives with a decade‑plus coaching résumé that includes stints at Mississippi State and Abilene Christian, where he helped orchestrate three consecutive 21‑win seasons and multiple NCAA Tournament berths. His reputation as a recruiter who secures top talent should prove pivotal for the Miners' future classes.
Joseph Jones, a former Texas A&M standout and seasoned coach, adds a blend of playing pedigree and tactical acumen. He earned WAC Coach of the Year honors at Tarleton State and guided the program to a school‑record 25 wins and a CIT Semifinal appearance, underscoring his ability to elevate team performance on both ends of the floor.
Drew Lakey, previously a key contributor at Ole Miss and Old Dominion, transitions from part‑time to full‑time assistant. At Ole Miss, he played a role in a historic season that culminated in the 2025 Sweet 16, and his background in player development, film analysis, and on‑court instruction is expected to accelerate the Miners' growth.
The new staff also brings a roster of supporting coaches and support personnel, including Joe Golding, Jayden Epps, Josh Hubbard, Willie Burnett III, Jeremy Cox, Cliff Ellis, DeVante’ Jones, Billy Gillispie, Jakorie Smith, KiAndre Gaddy, and Emmanuel Innocenti. Their combined experiences span multiple conferences and institutions, promising a rich tapestry of perspectives for UTEP's program.
University leadership expressed confidence that these hires will reinforce recruiting pipelines, enhance player conditioning, and embed advanced analytics into everyday practice. The additions align with the athletic department's broader vision of competing at the highest level within the NCAA landscape.
