Philip Thacker, a recent graduate of Chesapeake High School in Virginia, has announced his commitment to play football for West Virginia State University, opting for the gridiron over a lifelong love of basketball.
Though he spent his senior year as a defensive lineman, Thacker was recruited as a tight end, a role that aligns with his 53 tackles, 28 behind the line of scrimmage and a rare interception.
He plans to major in Agricultural Business at the university, balancing his athletic ambitions with a focus on academic growth.
Off the field, Thacker enjoys cooking and describes himself as adept in the kitchen, while also expressing gratitude for what he sees as divine guidance in his decision.
A Standout Amid Adversity
Thacker’s decision comes after a challenging season for his high school team, which managed only a single victory, yet he emerged as the only player from the Southeast District to earn first‑team honors.
Coaches and teammates alike anticipate that his blend of size, work ethic and academic focus will contribute positively to the university’s program, underscoring a growing pipeline of talent from Virginia’s high schools to historically black colleges and universities.
