The University of Cincinnati announced the addition of Deshaun Vaden, a 6‑foot‑11 junior who captured the Ohio Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year award at Mount Union. His arrival signals a strategic push to reinforce the Bearcats’ interior defense ahead of the upcoming season.
Defensive Anchor in the Paint
Standing tall with a wingspan that stretches the paint, Vaden brings a rare combination of size and shot‑blocking ability. In his most recent campaign he logged 102 blocked shots across 29 appearances, a statistic that placed him among the nation’s most intimidating rim protectors.
Coach Jerrod Calhoun praised the new recruit, stating that Vaden’s defensive instincts and capacity for growth make him a perfect fit for the program’s evolving identity. “We’re excited to see how his length will alter opponents’ shooting rhythms,” Calhoun said.
Vaden’s statistical profile also reveals a surprisingly efficient scorer; he shot 64.2 % from the field while averaging five points and 4.8 rebounds per game, highlighted by a 15‑point, 11‑rebound outing late in the season.
Although he did not pick up a basketball until the seventh grade, Vaden’s rapid development has been matched by his academic progress, granting him two years of eligibility to contribute immediately while preserving a future beyond the court.
