Weldon Nelms has been appointed head football coach and interim athletic director at Iowa Park, a role he previously held from 1994 to 1999. The school board announced the hire on Tuesday, noting that Nelms will step into the position after Bryan Wood resigned following a single year at the helm.
A Familiar Face Returns
Nelms first coached the Hawks during the mid‑1990s, compiling a record that helped stabilize the program and laying the groundwork for future successes. His return is seen as a move to bring continuity and institutional memory to the program.
Hall of Honor Induction
The Texas High School Coaches Association will induct Nelms into its Hall of Honor on July 18 in San Marcos. The ceremony will recognize his contributions to high school football across the state.
A Storied Career
Over a career spanning multiple stops, Nelms has amassed 242 wins, two state championships and 22 playoff appearances. He also captured 13 district titles, underscoring his ability to build winning teams.
Community leaders and former players alike have praised the decision, citing Nelms’s deep roots in the region and his reputation as a mentor. In his interim capacity, he will oversee both football operations and broader athletic programs as the district searches for a permanent director.
