John Blackwell, a former Wisconsin standout who earned Big Ten All‑Freshmen honors and became a two‑time All‑Big Ten selection, has taken a surprising turn in his basketball journey. After entering the transfer portal, he pledged to Duke while also declaring for the NBA Draft, but the road that led him there is rooted in a childhood dream of wearing the maize and blue at the University of Michigan.
A Dream Deferred
Growing up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Blackwell was a self‑declared fan of the Wolverines. He idolized former coach John Beilein and the exploits of alumni such as Trey Burke and Caris LeVert, hoping one day to follow them onto the Crisler Center floor.
Despite his admiration, Michigan never extended an offer. The program’s roster dynamics, coupled with transfer‑credit complications, made a senior‑year move impractical. At the same time, the Wolverines are poised for a major overhaul, losing much of their front court and welcoming a new influx of big men and a top‑ranked 2026 recruiting class.
Adding another layer to his story, Blackwell recently worked out with the Brooklyn Nets, where former Michigan assistant Juwan Howard is now part of the coaching staff. The session offered a glimpse of his versatility and raised questions about how his skill set might translate at the next level.
Through it all, Blackwell says he harbors no bitterness. He praises the work Dusty May has done in Ann Arbor and remains focused on his NBA aspirations, while keeping the memory of his Michigan dream alive as a source of motivation rather than regret.
