Local Coach Guides Flag Football Teams Toward National Championships

Josh Tufnell’s Buccaneers and Huskies programs expand youth participation in Wisconsin

Josh Tufnell first stepped onto the regional flag football scene four years ago, brimming with optimism but aware of his limited experience.

Rising Stars on the Field

This year, more than 350 girls and boys teams will converge in Westfield, Indiana, to vie for the NFL FLAG national championships, a testament to the sport’s surging popularity.

Tufnell’s 8‑under squad, known for its speed and skill, benefits from the guidance of coach Chris LeCloux, who has helped sharpen the players’ fundamentals.

He currently oversees two community leagues, the Buccaneers and the Huskies, which welcome boys and girls of various ages and are not restricted to residents of Howard or Suamico.

The Buccaneers division fields roughly 800 participants, while the Huskies boast close to 450 youngsters, with registration fees set at $90, $150 and $75 for the 3‑ and 4‑year‑old division.

A typical fall season comprises six regular‑game weeks, followed by a three‑game tournament and a bracket competition, whereas the spring schedule features a seven‑game slate, a round‑robin tournament and another bracket event.

Community Impact

Beyond league play, Tufnell’s teams regularly take part in the Ingold Family Foundation Charity Tournament and Block Party, a community fundraiser that blends music, entertainment and booths from local partners.

Looking ahead, Tufnell hopes to expand the program further and secure facilities that could serve local high school teams, giving them a dedicated space to train and compete.

The NFL’s active promotion of flag football, especially as a growing high‑school sport for girls, has been a major driver behind the momentum these grassroots programs are enjoying.
