LJ Mercurius, a junior right‑handed pitcher for the University of Oklahoma, has become a cornerstone of the Sooners’ baseball staff this spring.
In 18 appearances, including 12 starts, he carries a 6‑7 record and a 4.97 ERA, while leading the team with 70.2 innings pitched and 92 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting just .245 against him.
His postseason numbers are even sharper: a 0.90 ERA over 10 innings, 10 strikeouts, and the only complete game of the season, a victory over Gonzaga.
A Journey from Nevada to Norman
Before arriving in Norman, Mercurius honed his craft at UNLV, where he earned a spot on the 2025 All‑Mountain West Second Team. He was once the top‑ranked right‑hander in Nevada and received an invitation to the 2023 DREAM Series, a testament to his early promise.
Off the mound, he is the son of Neil and Christina Mercurius, grew up with siblings Felicia and Xander, and now studies criminal justice while his brother Xander also wears the Oklahoma uniform.
The family’s athletic pedigree extends beyond the diamond; brother Xander contributes as a fellow Sooner, adding depth to the pitching staff.
Coach Dave Anderson, who has tracked Mercurius since his high school days, praised the pitcher’s poise and work ethic, noting that the complete game against Gonzaga was a testament to his durability.
