A Legacy Built on Joy
For nearly three decades, Pete Kijinski has stood on the sidelines of the Northeast Ohio Challenger Baseball League, guiding players with the same dedication he first felt when he attended a church meeting that introduced him to the program in 1992. What began as a modest effort to bring little league baseball to children with disabilities has grown into a vibrant community where every participant is celebrated for their effort rather than their limitations.
The league, founded nationally in 1989 and established locally in the Brecksville‑Broadview Heights area a few years later, offers a unique adaptive division of baseball that welcomes children and young adults with a wide range of abilities. Its mission is simple: create an environment where the focus is on fun, teamwork, and personal growth, allowing disabilities to fade into the background of the game.
Kijinski’s early encounters with a local boy named Tommy D'Amico sparked a special bond that endures today. D'Amico, who once struggled to find his place on the field, has now evolved into a player‑coach, embodying the league’s philosophy of empowerment and mutual support. Their relationship illustrates how the program transforms lives beyond the scoreboard.
The league’s progress has been anchored by leaders who have shaped its culture. Jim Cipriani, a longtime president, steered the organization through pivotal years until his passing in 2021, leaving a legacy of stability and commitment. His successor, Brian Wolf, assumed the presidency in 2022 alongside his wife Karen, who together have taken on the responsibility of preserving the league’s inclusive spirit while expanding its reach.
Under the Wolfs’ stewardship, the league benefits from the generosity of numerous sponsors who fund operations and ensure that every season runs smoothly. Their combined efforts keep the fields safe, the equipment up‑to‑date, and the programs accessible to all families who wish to participate.
At the heart of every season is the league’s unrelenting emphasis on enjoyment and inclusivity. Whether a player is mastering a new skill or simply sharing a laugh with teammates, the ultimate goal remains the same: to make the experience so rewarding that the notion of disability becomes irrelevant on the diamond.
