The Summer Snaps flag football league in Swampscott has nearly doubled in size for its second season, now boasting more than 130 women across ten teams. What began as a modest experiment with 70 participants and six teams has quickly evolved into a vibrant community hub.
Despite a soaking rain that drenched the field on opening night, the league pressed forward, with all ten squads taking the field and the sidelines filled with cheering families. The electric atmosphere was palpable, as spectators wrapped in raincoats turned the event into a spirited celebration of sport and camaraderie.
More Than a Game
Beyond the touchdowns and tackles, the league offers a welcoming space for women to stay active, compete, and forge lasting friendships. After each match, teammates often head to local diners and pubs, sharing meals and swapping stories that extend the camaraderie well beyond the gridiron.
The defending champions, the Salty Beaches, are eager to protect their title as the season unfolds. Their pursuit adds an extra layer of excitement, but the true draw for many players is the sense of belonging that the league cultivates.
Co-founders Kristin Doerrer and Katelyn Leonard have been instrumental in shaping the league’s inclusive ethos. Their vision of a fun, supportive environment has resonated with participants who frequently spot one another around town, recognizing the shared bond forged on the field.
The league’s rapid growth reflects a broader demand for women‑focused recreational opportunities in the region. With each new team, the community expands, proving that a simple idea — flag football for women — can blossom into a thriving, rain‑soaked tradition.
